Supplies:

• ·      Cheap concealer (Covergirl brand in Ivory)
• ·      Cheap blush (any pink will do)
• ·      Black eye shadow and eyeliner
• ·      Red lipstick
• ·      2 white or off white slips (related to underclothes, being close to undressed but not quite there yet)
• ·      A nude bandeau top with nude shorts (preferably high waisted)
• ·      A Sheet of white paper
• ·      Four gold nails

The Transfer:

1. Two Girls and Sam Whalen will stand in a room, the audience will enter. They will have kind faces, nothing stern or too serious.

2. On the wall behind the girls will be a piece of paper nailed to the wall in all four corners with 4 gold nails.

3. The two girls will be in white or off white slips and Sam Whalen will be in nude high waisted sorts and a nude bandeau top (appearing nude but not actually nude, looking vulnerable but not really that vulnerable-still protected). All girls will be barefooted and minimal make up on their face to start.

4. In order to decide who wears the heavy make up and starts the transfer, the two girls who are not Sam Whalen girls will play a game of rock, paper, scissors (related to childhood/school yard games/not gender specific). The “winner” wears the makeup and become the Source. Once the winner is decided, Sam Whalen and the other girl will begin putting makeup on the source girl. They will coat it on heavily.

5. The Source and the girl who is not Sam Whalen (the Medium) begin to try to transfer the makeup – they rub their faces together. This includes eyelids and lips. Lips will remain closed while rubbing them to ensure the performance doesn’t include actual sexual activity. Hands can not be used in the process (they can remain at the sides, be folded in front, or hands clasps around the back).

6. Rubbing faces will take 21 seconds counted like “one one thousand… two one thousand..” While the Source and the Medium rub faces, Sam Whalen will be behind the Medium, whispering in her ear memories that come to mind of moments where she recalls adapting something from a girl friend. Once the 21 seconds are up… The Source will transfer the trait to Sam Whalen in the same fashion.

7. All girls will remain silent while the makeup is transferred to Sam Whalen’s face. She will count in her head to 21 in the fashion mentioned in step 7. When the time is up, she will then go over to the paper and rub her face on it for 21 seconds. She will say these numbers out loud as the moments pass.

8. The Source and The medium will then put their regular clothes on and leave the performance. They will not remain for the critique*.

9. The End will be signified by Sam Whalen saying “I’m done” and smiling.

*The two girls will not remain because their accounts of the event cannot be recalled unless they are contacted outside of the moment at a later time. Their recollection and physical reactions to the event will be altered by the passage of time (space between the event and themselves) and by their own individual frames (their personal context).
